Handwoven Paper Rope Pendant Shade

Paper rope is an unusual shade material and a very effective one. Woven into a shade it diffuses light softly through the fibre while the coiled rope texture stays visible as a series of horizontal lines, so the shade has real surface interest lit or unlit.

It is also light. A woven paper rope shade weighs a fraction of a comparable metal or glass one, which means it can be made generously large without needing special ceiling anchoring, and a big shade over a table is exactly where this material looks best.

Three finishes are offered. The brown is the undyed natural tone and warms the light passing through it; white keeps the transmitted light neutral; black is the most opaque and throws more of the output down and out of the ends than through the weave. Use a low-wattage cool-running LED bulb, since paper fibre and sustained heat should not be combined, and dust with a soft dry brush rather than a damp cloth.
