The symmetry has a practical benefit too. A single-direction sconce leaves half the wall dark, and in a stairwell that unlit half is usually the part you need to see. Lighting both ways removes the gap without adding a second fitting.

The sources are recessed at each end so there is no glare at eye level as you pass.
