The lantern silhouette is the oldest form of exterior lighting and still the most legible one. A shaped housing with glazed sides reads immediately as a doorway light, which is why it suits a sheltered porch or entrance better than a flat modern box that could be anything.

This version is drawn in a modern European idiom: the proportions of a traditional lantern with the detail stripped out, so it sits comfortably on a contemporary house as well as an older one. Light escapes through the glazing on all sides, lighting the wall and the path rather than only the ground directly beneath.
