Finish and light source have to agree with each other. The gold-toned version of this lamp is warm rather than brassy, and because the LED inside is warm-toned too, the two work together instead of the shade turning the light green the way a cool source behind a gold finish tends to. Black and white versions are also offered for rooms where a metallic finish would be too much.

It runs on an internal rechargeable cell, which is what makes it genuinely portable. There is no cable trailing off the table, so it can go in the middle of a dinner setting, on a windowsill, on a bathroom shelf, or out to a sheltered balcony for an evening and come back in afterwards.

Brightness is set by touch across several levels, from a very low glow suited to a hallway at night up to enough light to read by. A full charge covers an evening comfortably at lower settings. Charge from a standard USB source, keep the charging port dry, give it a full charge before first use, and unplug it once charged rather than leaving it on charge unattended overnight.
