Japanese Rice Paper Zen Table Lamp

Rice paper is the oldest good answer to the problem of glare. Light passing through the fibers scatters completely, so the whole surface of the shade glows at an even, low intensity and there is no visible source anywhere on it, from any angle.

That quality is why paper lanterns have stayed in Japanese interiors for centuries and why designers keep coming back to them. The light they give is closer to daylight through a paper screen than to a lamp, which is what makes a room feel calm rather than lit.

The frame is minimal so the paper does the work, and the whole lamp is light enough to move between a bedside and a floor position easily. Paper is fragile: keep it away from water and sharp edges, and dust with a soft dry brush rather than a cloth. Use a low-wattage warm LED bulb, since paper and sustained heat should never be combined.
