Japanese interiors treat light as something to be softened rather than delivered, and stone is a good material for that job. This sconce uses travertine as both the body and the diffuser, so light emerges around and through the edges of the stone rather than out of a visible source.

Travertine carries its own record of how it formed: fine banding, small natural voids, tonal shifts across a single piece. Lighting it from within rather than pointing a lamp at it means those features are revealed from behind, which is a very different effect from a spotlight on a stone wall.

Expect variation between pieces. The voids and color bands are characteristic of the material rather than defects in it, and no two fittings will match exactly. Stone is heavy: fix into a sound substrate with rated anchors.
