Bauhaus Style Opal Glass Table Lamp

The shape is the whole argument. A domed opal glass shade, a slim metal column, a round base — no ornament, no visible fixings, nothing applied on top. It is a Bauhaus-era silhouette that has stayed in production in one form or another for a century because the proportions simply work. This is our own take on that shape, not a reissue of any particular maker's lamp.

Opal glass is the reason it still functions as well as it looks. The dome diffuses the source completely, so what you get is an even pool of light rather than a bright bulb behind a screen, and it is comfortable to sit beside on a desk for hours at a time. Light also escapes upward through the shade, lifting the space above the lamp instead of leaving it dark.

The column and base are weighted metal with a matt finish, heavy enough that the lamp stays where it is put. It suits a desk, a console table or a sideboard, and it holds its own in a room with strong modern furniture. A standard screw-fit outlet takes the bulb of your choosing; a warm frosted LED suits it best. It plugs straight in with no assembly.
