Industrial exterior lighting was designed for places that get used hard, which is exactly what makes it suit a domestic entrance. A black metal housing with a glass panel is honest about what it is, and it looks appropriate on a workshop, a garden wall or a back door in a way a decorative lantern often does not.

The construction is visible rather than concealed: the frame holds the glass, the fixings are where you would expect, and nothing is dressed up. That plainness is also practical, since there are fewer recesses to collect water and dirt over the years.

Do not install it in an exposed position, in direct rain, or anywhere it can be hit by sprinklers or standing water. A fully sheltered, covered position only. It is a hardwired fitting - isolate the circuit at the breaker panel first, and have a qualified electrician confirm the fixture's rated voltage before wiring it in. Exterior electrical work must be carried out by a qualified electrician using exterior-rated cable and glands.
