Mounting a splitter to a wall or post fixes the one variable that makes hatchet work dangerous: the blade cannot move. You drive the log down onto a rigid edge with both hands on the wood and the mallet, and there is no swing to misjudge and nothing to glance off at an angle.

Wall mounting also means it is always in the same place at the right working height, which matters if you are splitting kindling every day through a winter. There is nothing to set up, nothing to level and nothing to put away afterwards.

High carbon steel takes and holds an edge under repeated striking far better than mild steel. Mount it into sound masonry or a solid timber post with fixings rated well above the striking loads, never into fence panels or thin cladding. Strike with a wooden or rubber mallet rather than a steel hammer, wear eye protection, and keep children and pets well clear of the working area.
