Hummingbird Window Suncatcher

A suncatcher only works if it is put somewhere the sun actually reaches, and then it works in a way no static ornament can. Light passing through the colored panels lands on the wall or floor inside, and the patch of color moves and changes shape through the day as the sun does.

The hummingbird is a good subject for the treatment because the bird is already associated with iridescence, and colored glass panels reading against the light behave much the way real hummingbird plumage does when it catches the sun.

It hangs from a window catch, a hook or a suction fitting, and works equally well in a porch, a conservatory or a kitchen window over the sink. East-facing windows give the effect in the morning, west-facing in the evening. Clean with a soft dry cloth. If it is hung outdoors, bring it in during high winds and hard frost, both of which can crack panels.
