Hanging a wall lamp from a leather strap rather than bolting it to a bracket changes the character of the whole fitting. The strap has give in it, the lamp sits slightly away from the wall, and the arrangement reads as something assembled by hand rather than manufactured as a unit.

Leather and timber are a reliable pairing because they age in the same direction. Both darken and soften with handling, so the fitting looks better after two years than it did on the day it went up, which is not true of most powder-coated metal.

Practically it works as a bedside light hung at head height, freeing the table entirely, or in a hallway where a strap-hung lamp is more interesting than another flush sconce. Keep the strap clear of the bulb's heat and use a low-wattage warm LED. This is a hard-wired fitting: isolate the circuit at the breaker panel before installation, and use a qualified electrician if you are not confident with house wiring.
