Rustic Rattan & Wood Wall Sconce

Rattan and light have an old relationship. Woven over a frame, the material lets some light through and stops the rest, so the wall around the fitting fills with a pattern of fine shadows that changes as you move past it. That is the whole appeal, and it cannot be printed or molded.

Here the weave is set against a solid wood backplate, which grounds it and stops the fitting looking flimsy. The two natural materials sit well together and read as handmade rather than manufactured, which suits a country cottage, a rustic bedroom or a modern room that needs one warm, textural element to stop it feeling cold.

Each shade is woven by hand, so the tightness of the weave and the tone of the fiber vary a little between pieces. Use a low-wattage warm bulb to keep heat away from the natural material and to get the best shadow pattern. This is a hard-wired fitting: isolate the circuit at the breaker panel before installation, and have a qualified electrician carry out the work if you are not confident with house wiring.
